Lighting IP Rating Standard, LED Light Manufacturer

lighting IP rating, waterproof solar lamp led lights

Lighting IP rating is a standard value that indicates the resistance of an electronic product such as floodlights or LED lights to external interference. These external disturbances include pressure from the weather like heavy rain, extreme temperatures, dust, sand, fog, pressure from human hands, pressure from surrounding equipment, and cables.

From the lighting IP rating listed on the product packaging for floodlights or LED lights, we can find out the resistance of these lights. The part of the lamp that is rated for its IP rating is the body or casing. The price and quality of the floodlights and LED lights are largely determined by the durability of the body.

The casing or body of the floodlight protects all small components of a lamp such as LED chips, cables, capacitors, diodes, and others to be protected from dirt and water. The stronger the floodlight body protects the lamp from external interference factors, the higher the price.

IP Rating

IP rating always starts with ‘IP’, which stands for Ingress Protection. A lighting IP rating essentially rates a light source based on how effectively it is protected from exterior elements such as liquids, solids, and vapors. The IP rating will determine where your lamp can be installed and how much moisture or external force it can safely come into contact with.

The higher the IP rating, the more protection the light source has. The two digits number following the IP has relevance for outdoor lighting. So you should consider both when choosing lighting. Lighting IP rating is the standard for determining which lights will be installed indoors or outdoors. The outdoor IP rating is quite different from the IP rating for interior lighting.

The lights in the room at least only got splashed from the shower water in the bathroom. Meanwhile, when the lamp is placed outdoors, your lamp may come into contact with all kinds of external forces such as being accidentally touched or stepped on, intentional interference, the accidental force from tools, and shovels, wildlife activity, dust, dirt, and wires.

Then, heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and flooding can make the lights submerged in water. All of these elements can cause damage and malfunction to your outdoor lighting if you don’t have the proper level of protection for where they are placed and the elements they come into contact with.

Two Digits Behind IP

Lighting IP rating is always indicated by the initial ‘IP’ followed by a two-digit number. The first digit indicates the level of protection against solids that a particular light source has. While the second digit indicates how waterproof the light is. The higher the number, the more protection the light source has.

First Digit

The first digit of the lighting IP rating indicates the resistance of the electronic device to solids. Solids resistance levels are coded from the numbers 0 - 6. for floodlights used in outdoor areas, the IP solid object protection rating is usually between 4 to 6.

The solid object IP rating of 4 protects the floodlight components from solid objects that have a diameter of more than 1 mm and not dust. While, for floodlights in areas that are very dusty or in environments with strong winds, the IP rating used is 5 to 6.

Second Digit

The second digit of the IP rating indicates the resistance of the electronic device to liquids. This second-digit lighting IP rating is coded between 0 to 8. outdoor floodlights usually have a second-digit IP rating with a value of 4 and above.

  • The IP rating of 4 is for floodlights that are resistant to splashes of water from all directions.
  • The IP rating of 5 is for floodlights that are resistant to water spray from all directions.
  • The IP rating of 6 is for floodlights that are resistant to water spray with strong pressure from all directions.
  • The IP rating of 7 is for floodlights that are waterproof for 30 minutes when immersed in water to a depth of 1 meter.
  • The IP rating of 8 is intended for floodlights that are water-resistant when permanently submerged in water up to a depth of 4 meters.
