As the capital of the country, Mexico City is a prosperous and densely populated city. To cover the safety and protection of the inhabitants, night lighting has become a serious continual program from the various authorities. Started from using the lantern to the era of solar streetlight, the in-charge authorities possess the main part to succeed it.

Street lighting in Spanish American cities is a unique phenomenon, and it has grown so fast as the subject of research in recent years. Solar streetlight in Mexico, as well as the preceding street lighting, is interlinked with the authorities.
In 1763, all inhabitants in Mexico City were obliged to light a lantern from six to ten at night. Toward the year 1790, as the regulations were drafted by Viceroy Revillagigedo, street lighting in Mexico City was managed by various urban authorities. As the first Madrid settlement in 1765, the inhabitants failed to fulfill the obligation due to the inability to afford the variable cost since there wasn’t enough goodwill from the inhabitants, no public lighting in 1790.
As the street lighting was handled by the authorities, there were two important parts, the lantern as part of street decoration and the guardafaroles, the municipal officer, who handled the lighting and the function of the lanterns. To achieve modernization, there were thousands of lanterns in Mexico City in 1790. This year was considered as the birth certificate of lighting.
The lighting lanterns showed how the city was governed and reflected the character of the Enlightenment era. The various policies about street lighting in the 18th century were aimed to manage populations and urban territories. Street lighting was an action to prevent crimes, improve urban order, reach the city’s cleanliness, fire fighting, remove stray dogs, and many others more.
In 1770-1780 many cities in European countries used lampposts as street lighting. Approaching 1790, Mexico City used tin lamps and turnip oil. In Paris, there was a lamp post every 15 meters, while in Mexico City it was installed every 40 m. This slow and considerable progress was due to the fiscal and financial problems in the various authorities. As the lamp post altered to gaslighting in 1830, some private sectors took part in the lighting actions.
The 2010-2012 Climate Change Program from the Mexican government was aimed to cut the municipality’s energy usage. In ten years forward, it planned to take about 40.000 cars off the roads, from any city. In addition, it planned to achieve energy saving up to 51%. Some cash can be saved for other functional purposes.
This project was a part of the commitment to energy reform by diminishing excessive energy consumption, delivering energy-efficient lighting. They were all done for the sake of the community, security, environment, and the economy.
To support the reform, the energy will be provided from solar power to get the plan of zero carbon emissions. The installment of solar streetlights in Mexico may decrease the energy consumption in the city and achieve zero carbon emissions.
To meet future energy demands, the Mexican government must invest in lasting energy projects and eco-friendly technology. Both investments will help to stabilize the consumer’s cost and to supply the large number of households. The installation, management, and operation of the solar streetlight in Mexico will provide many kinds of jobs.
LED will be used in a big way in Mexico City. There will be so many solar streetlight companies that will offer their project to succeed with the aim of energy-saving and zero carbon emissions. SDD Light will be one of them. Supported by the international certificate, products from SDD Light will meet the customers’ criteria and satisfaction. SDD Light is in Hongkong, but their products have reached the market of North America, Europe, and Asian countries. It is unquestionably qualified for the project of solar streetlight in Mexico.
To speak about solar street lighting is not only to speak about lighting itself, but also the policy, the authority, and the job availability. Hope it can achieve both goals, a healthy environment and a prosperous community.
